How to: Replace a plug-and-play IDE hard drive controller card.
Solution:
Observe ESD considerations, and install the plug-and-play IDE hard drive controller card.
WARNING: Electrical shock hazard! Make sure the power is turned off and the external power cables have been disconnected before removing the computer cover.
CAUTION 1: This task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
CAUTION 2: Please observe steps to reduce the potential damage to computer components from electrostatic discharge.
NOTE 1: If there is an IDE hard drive controller embedded on the motherboard, you may need to disable the IDE controller on the motherboard before the new controller adapter card can be installed. You can add the new IDE hard drive controller as a secondary IDE controllers Configure the IDE hard drive controller on the motherboard as the primary IDE controller. For further instructions on how to configure multiple IDE controllers, contact next-level support or refer to the technical manuals for the computer, and hard drive controllers.
NOTE 2: Some IDE hard drive controller adapter card also include a floppy drive controller. If you are not going to use the floppy drive controller on the IDE hard drive controller adapter card, disable the floppy drive controller before installing the adapter card. Refer to the adapter card manual or contact next-level support for further instructions.
1) Shut down Windows 95, and turn off the computer.
2) Disconnect the external power cord from computer.
3) Remove the computer cover.
4) Determine the expansion slot type for the IDE controller card.
5) Locate the existing IDE hard drive controller card by tracing the ribbon cable connected to the hard drives back to the controller.
6) If the IDE hard drive controller is an adapter card, do the following:
a) Unplug the cables connected to the IDE hard drive controller adapter card.
b) Remove the screw securing the IDE controller card to the computer.
c) Lift the IDE controller card from the expansion slot with both hands.
CAUTION: Be careful not to snag any cables or scratch components when lifting the IDE controller card from the computer.
7) If the IDE hard drive controller is embedded on the motherboard, do the following:
a) Unplug the cables connected to the IDE hard drive controller.
b) Disable the IDE hard drive controller using hardware jumper(s).
NOTE: Refer to the computers user manual for instructions on how to disable onboard IDE controller.
8) Align the IDE controller card parallel with an empty slot matching the card, and insert the card into the slot.
CAUTION: Keep the card vertical while inserting it into an expansion, and be careful not to bend the IDE controller card. Bending the IDE controller card can damage the circuitry.
9) Connect the ribbon data cable to the connector on the IDE hard drive controller card and to the large connector on the rear of the hard drives (red or blue side to Pin1).
10) Replace the computer cover.
11) Reconnect the external computer power cord, and turn on the computer. (Allow Windows 95 to load normally.)
NOTE 1: Windows 95 will auto-detect the new IDE hard drive controller card and auto configure system drivers for the controller.
NOTE 2: If Windows 95 does not detect the controller, install the driver included with the controller.
